Answers to typical questions about power rating, fuel, controls and sizing of industrial generators.
German Generator supplies generator solutions from portable generators for mobile applications to industrial diesel and gas generator sets for critical infrastructure. The portfolio ranges from 2-20 kVA for portable generators, gas generators up to 1100 kVA and industrial diesel generators from 5 to 3300 kVA. Depending on the project, standby power, Continuous Power and mains-parallel solutions are available.
For generator sizing, simply adding up connected loads is usually not enough. Starting currents from motors, pumps, compressors and other inductive loads are also important. An electric motor can briefly require three to seven times its rated power during startup.
The generator must therefore cover both the continuous load and simultaneous load peaks. Useful information for a reliable sizing assessment includes connected consumers, motor ratings, load profile, operating mode and desired power reserve.
Diesel generators are particularly suitable for standby power, mobile applications and high power ranges in industry and infrastructure. They offer high power density and flexible deployment options.
Gas generators are often used when predictable power supply or economical Continuous Power is required. Depending on the project, natural gas or LPG solutions may be used. The choice depends on operating time, fuel availability, economic considerations and project requirements.
The selection depends on several factors: power, fuel, operating mode, installation location, noise requirements and control technology. Load profile, starting currents, standby function and possible future extensions are also important.
For an initial technical assessment, information about power, application, preferred fuel and installation site is helpful. On this basis, a technically and economically suitable solution can be selected.
An ATS/AMF solution is used when consumers should continue to be supplied automatically in the event of a mains failure. The control system monitors the public grid, starts the generator automatically and switches the load. Once mains power returns, the system switches back automatically.
Such solutions are often used in industrial plants, data centers, telecommunications, building services and other critical applications.
Whether grounding is required depends on the grid system, the application and the applicable regulations. There is therefore no universal answer.
